Since episodes 1 and 2 are linked, I decided to review them together, is what I would say. But honestly, it was more of me being lazy to write a post… Anyway, to sum it up, Chihayafuru is back, with 2 new characters!
My thoughts for Ep 1 was mainly that the anime with the good old artwork and intense game of Karuta has returned! However, gone are the wows and aahs when someone swipes the card away extremely quickly. And Chihaya has made up for it with the introduction of two new juniors.
First off, Hanano Sumire who has gotten lots of screen time in the first two eps. Personally, i felt that she was not needed and kinda annoying in the first ep. However, by the end of ep 2, I feel that she will come to develop a liking for Karuta, especially after she talked to Harada-sensei where that “I don’t understand” answer left her thinking (she was even thinking about Karuta in the something-C Donalds: just cut off the first letter wow…) Being crazy about love, she can also really relate to the cards and come to love them, in the end, becoming better at Karuta.
Also, Sumire can act as a catalyst for the relationship between Chihaya and Taichi with Chihaya being Chihaya who still does not know about Taichi’s feelings. Hence, Sumire with her one-sided love (that is hopeless), can push Taichi to be more open about his feelings, in turn improving on his relationship with Chihaya. With Arata still at Fukui (and that few seconds of him in ep 1) and out of the picture for now, Taichi really does stand a chance.
The other new member is Tsukuba Akihiro, coming from Hokkaido with Second-Verse Karuta. It is really interesting to know that there is even such thing (it was already good to know that Karuta existed). However, the playing styles are slightly different: Tsukuba used both hands and banged the floor for intimidation. He is a weird one, and sadistic too, reminding me of Sudou, the other sadist from season 1. The good thing is that he has the determination to become good, or even one of the best in Karuta. Thus, both the first years can really contribute to both the competitions and the development of the other characters.
Ok, enough about the new ones, how about the five that we are already familiar with? It was really nice and humorous to see Chihaya being greedy with the competitions and 100 new members. However, the best thing is that Chihaya is more aware of her surroundings. She is not like in season 1 where she was so obsessed with Karuta, and did not care about the other members’ feelings. Now, she understands them better, even making Taichi think for himself for once.
Okay, since i’m lazy, I shall leave the rest to pictures… With Before in Ep1 and After in Ep2… xP
And that’s all! Continue spreading the love for Karuta, Chihaya!!!
